Start with the classics
If you haven’t seen all of the classics yet, it is time to start with what is unanimously considered as the masterpieces of the genre, some movies so epic that we even find it hard to believe that you don’t know them by heart by now.
Apparently, the top of the list is attributed to the 70s classic, The Godfather. Starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, and Diane Keaton just to name of few, this masterpiece was directed by ultra-popular director Francis Ford Coppola. And, no matter how many reinterpretations this one had over the years, one thing is for sure – Marlon Brando will always be remembered as Don Vito Corleone, “il capo di tutti capi”.
Another classic of the genre is also one of the movies that definitely turned a young Johnny Depp into a Hollywood superstar. Directed by Mike Newell back in 1997, Donnie Brasco is considered Al Pacino’s last gangster movie, but also one of his best. The story depicts a young FBI agent who goes undercover and infiltrates into the mob only to identify himself more by the day with what is going on inside the mafia.
Last but not least, we can also include in this list the 1990’s Goodfellas, starring a much younger but similarly talented Robert de Niro. Directed by another titan of the industry, Martin Scorsese, the movie tells the story of Henry Hill, a guy who joins the mafia after a rough adolescence.
As you may have noticed already, some of the genre’s masterpieces are played by the same actors, almost each of them having a crucial role in the development of the American “gangster” movie genre. Robert De Niro, Al Pacino or Johnny Depp all play their parts brilliantly, managing to humanize the rather cruel and violent existence of the world’s most famous mafia leaders in the world.
By the director
The world’s biggest movie directors have made history with their own versions of gangsters. Each of them brought their own perspective and tried to depict as accurately as possible the duality of the most influential mob leaders in 2020 the cruelty showed in business by comparison to their soft side when it came to their families and, especially their wives.
